Generative artificial intelligence has become an emerging educational tool with the potential to support critical thinking in students through explanation generation, immediate feedback, information analysis, argument comparison, and personalized learning support. This study aimed to analyze the contribution of generative artificial intelligence to strengthening critical thinking in higher education students, according to the scientific literature published between 2020 and 2026. according to the scientific literature published between 2020 and 2026. An integrative literature review was conducted using a systematic search process based on the identification, screening, eligibility, and inclusion stages established by PRISMA 2020. The final corpus consisted of 15 publications related to generative artificial intelligence, ChatGPT, large language models, education, ethical use, student reasoning, and critical thinking. The findings were organized into four thematic categories: generative artificial intelligence and the development of critical thinking; feedback, personalization, and support for reasoning; ethics, technological dependence, and responsible use of AI; and teacher mediation, assessment, and educational limitations. The results indicate that generative AI can support critical thinking when it is used to question, compare, verify, and improve information rather than merely obtain automatic answers. However, its effectiveness depends on pedagogical design, teacher guidance, student responsibility, academic integrity, and the critical evaluation of AI-generated responses. It is concluded that generative artificial intelligence can strengthen critical thinking in students when implemented as a planned, ethical, and supervised educational strategy.
